I've finally figured out how to get into my blog on this Korean computer. We are in a pretty random part of the world right now--possibly more random than Playas, Ecuador. This race was supposed to be in Singapore but race organizers had to pull out for financial reasons. So, they needed to find a location that was in the same region and settled on Tongyeong because they have had a world cup here something like seven times in the past. It is a town/city on the southern coast of South Korea. I wouldn't say it is a triathlon hotbed, although there are a fair share of people riding around on bikes, mostly the folding ones you see in NYC. I haven't done much of anything so far other than try to get used to the time difference. I've worked out a total of 3 hours since the race in St. Anthony's. This is the kind of place where you are probably better staying inside than riding a bike or running in the street. The other athletes are going to be in for a treat when they get to the DC race!!
I'm hoping my non-working out strategy pays off because it is starting to drive me crazy. As we know, sitting still is not exactly my strong suit. This morning I got up super early and wandered over to the markets. Kind of like a really authentic chinatown, but not as chaotic. Lots of women squating down cleaning live seafood--every kind you can imagine. I did see some sea urchin for those who are into that. There were also lots of fresh veggies, peppers, garlic, lots of varieties of onions, huge carrots, seaweed(!!!) and, of course lots of pickled stuff.
I'd like to go to a "good" seafood restaurant after the race--but, until then, I'm eating rice crackers with peanut butter and honey and packages of instant oatmeal. Rice crackers are so not my thing, but I haven't been able to find any decent bread.
Well, I'm off to read Tuesday's newspaper for the second time. Who knows, maybe I missed something.
